They had their poker faces on, but all bets were off when they took to the stage.
The choral ensemble from Orlando Lutheran Towers dubbed The Downtowners, took their places on an outside stage to perform their own rendition of Lady Gaga’s, “Poker Face” for the Come Out With Pride Day at Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando this past Saturday.
The singing group, clad in their bright red long sleeved shirts donning their namesake, got the crowd clapping to the beat as they sang their own version of Kenny Chesney’s country hit, “She Thinks My Tractors Sexy.” In the parody, “My Cellmate Thinks I’m Sexy,” clever lyrics poked fun at a cellmate living situation. Cowboy hats, wigs and props were not left out of this comedic performance.
Most of the songs, which spanned the generations from 1960’s to present day hits, were upbeat but The Downtowners slowed it down with an endearing performance of Elvis’ 1972 hit, “Only Fools Rush In.”
In keeping with the light-hearted nature of their age, they sang “I Wanna Be Sedated,” by The Ramones and The Bee Gees’ “Stayin Alive.” Also in the line up was a commemorative to the late Amy Winehouse, singing her biggest hit “Rehab.” A strong finish came with the crowd singing along to The Village People’s, “YMCA.” Jeanne Asher, the group’s leader, said those in the group range from 65-97 years old.
